no, I am not in HK; I am in Canada. When I went to Europe alone, many years ago, my uncle said I went to 流浪. Even now, I see people are talking about 國內流浪. I suppose it is a good life experience, because you get to face uncertainties during your travel, and you learn how to handle them, and you get to talk to people from different walks of life. Seeing good scenery is nice, but getting to know people, talking to them, will give you a sense of perspective in life, to enhance your values. In terms of danger, you need to exercise caution, use your common sense, and just enjoy!

Paul

I do not think much about the "dream" anymore, except that, whenever I go back to HK, I shall spend the time travelling to China as well, but only to a few places, within a very limited time frame.

版主回應 sounds like you are not here in hong kong?

Paul

I have been going back, but only been to places I had not been before. I went mainly to Guangxi(Guilin, YangShoi, Nanning, and Beihai). I joined a tour group to Shunde as well. I still find people in general very friendly. I have no intention to go the same route then I went before as the most time I can be in China is 2 wks(plus 1 wk in HK)! If I do have lots of money, without having to work, then I shall travel to China for 6 months! This is a dream that will never come true though!

cannot say travel was bad at the time, but the worst time was when I took the train(do not remember from where to where).I could not buy a hard bed ticket so had to take the hard seat ticket. The situation was similar to yours, train, even the aisle, was full of people, and I tried not to go to the washroom in fear of trampling others,or had my seat taken(I did, and the seat was taken, but I asked the guy to give way afterward).I was with a girl from England who studied in Beijing whom I met on the train.I was sick(caught a cold) while taking the boat to YangZhou(I think),and right off the boat,I went to a hotel, but the hotel said it would not take foreigner.I insisted as I said I was sick, then I managed to stay. The people there were nice, knowing I was sick, took me to the hospital, took the medicine, and got well soon!People were very friendly, nice, and willing to talk to me(as I asked many questions). At a place, had to go to a toilet, found one within an apartment complex, but saw a lot of shits that nobody cleaned.I saw that people living in the apartment near the toiletry could actually see inside.I saw people, mostly elderly men, urinated whenever they felt like, because there were no public toiletry!

Thanks for sharing so many good old stories!

Have you got back to mainland in these few years? Things have been changing really quick there. I bet if you have the opportunity taking the same trip, going the same route 25 years after, you will be flooded with all sort of emotion and be completely amazed!

I actually went to Europe(backpacking alone for about 4 weeks) right after graduation from Canada(directly to England from Toronto), went back to HK, worked for a few months, then decided to travel to China. The reason was that I was thinking of immigrating to Canada, and I wanted to see what China was like before I left! I did meet people from HK who travelled alone back then, as after going back to HK, few of us met for lunch once(I only attended once).Back then,I had to use 外匯X(cannot find the word).I used this currency all the way to Shanghai, before a man approached me on the streets for local Yuan.Local people did not travel much so it was not that terrible then!I did not plan, but just had a map of China, talked to people, listened to what they said, and just went to many places!I do not remember how much money I brought, but managed to travel so many days! The only thing I have left with me now,is a down jacket I bought then(I still wear it now) that was green color(two pieces,a jacket like a wind breaker and a down jacket.I still remember some of the scenes and places I had been to. One was in a street stall where I ordered chicken dish. The guy cut up a chicken, cooked it, and threw it on my desk and said: "eat" in not a friendly way.The chicken tasted like rubber!Another was in a restaurant, and I saw a young boy picking up leftovers on the desk, and he saw me, stared at me, with eyes full of hatred(maybe because he did not have anything to eat while we could have as much as we wanted).Another one was in the street, full of dirt, and a girl mopping the road back and forth all day! I went to ask if she was doing the same thing everyday, many times, and she said yes!

I had a trip around China, almost 25 years ago. I did not carry a camera, and did not write any travel log, but can still remember many places that I had been to, and some people I met! I agree that you should travel when you have the time, at least once. A pretty good travel log that you wrote!

I don't think there were a lot of people possessing the courage to travel around China 25 years before. Traffic sucked, accommodation sucked...everything was simply terrible.

If I had chance, I'd really love to hear the stories of those traveler from the previous generation. I just can't imagine how tough it can be to travel without computers and information.

Backpacker back then were real ADVENTURER!
